Lolita 52 - Why I wear lolita

Well, this post is a little bit late, it was supposed to go up last week, but I've been traveling so much recently what with AWA and last weekend's trip to see the in-laws that I've been too exhausted to attend to the blog. I'm actually now a week behind, so I'll probably be making 2 posts this week!

So... why do I wear lolita? There's a few reasons I can think of, and I'm sure none of them are new. This post is particularly timely because it directly follows a convention, and every one of these feelings are present when getting ready for and attending one.

It makes me feel beautiful.

The majority of the time I feel like I have an unfortunate body type. I tend to carry my weight on top, and have never been satisfied with the way I look in normal clothing, even at my thinnest. And despite the fact that my body type is certainly not the ideal for this fashion (oh the woes of being busty!), I love how the full skirts seem to balance out my top half. I'm not going to lie, at times it can be frustrating dressing and shopping to accommodate for my bust, but nothing beats how wonderful I feel pulling together and wearing a coordinate.

It gives me a creative outlet.

I've spent a lot of my time teaching myself a variety of different crafts, and what for? I can sew, knit, crochet, I make jewelry, and can do many other things. However, for a while I had all of these skills but no reason for them. I don't make things to sell. I rarely can gather the motivation to make things for other people. However, since getting into the fashion, I've found this skill set I've built that previously seemed wasted has found a place. I've found a purpose and a reason for crafting. This skill set has found a home.

Now if only I can pull together the motivation to make things to sell...

It has given me the opportunity to meet many amazing and beautiful people.

After graduation it can be difficult to find people that share similar interests as you. Just because you work somewhere doesn't necessarily mean you'll find people with the same likes and dislikes just because you happen to be in the same field. Also, life gets in the way. It's understandable, people grow older and may grow apart, it happens at every stage of life. Being involved in a social hobby like lolita brings people together and gives them a purpose for gathering. And even if you don't find a BFF through the fashion, there are many wonderful people to meet and things to do with others that share in this frilly fashion. Conventions become a lot more fun when you know you'll be running into people you've met before. And even though the lolita community seems to have such a catty reputation for drama, that's almost exclusively confined to anonymous forums on the internet. In my experience, the lolita community as a whole has been nothing but welcoming and friendly and is home to a wonderful group of people that usually share more interests with you than just this fashion.

  1. I love and share all of your reasons. They are very well explained and clear. There's not much I can add to what you've already said. Lolita does boost my confidence by making me feel beautiful, it did gave an entertaining hobbey and filled a hole in my life and it did helped me find amazing people. I still do not have a Lolita best friend but I do have many people online that I admire and love to chat with. :)
